Service Dog Tag Size Guide: Which Size Fits Your Breed?

The short answer

  • Small breeds: use a 0.999-inch (about 1 inch) tag.
  • Medium and large breeds: use a 1.25-inch tag.

A tag should be big enough to read from a few feet away, but not so big that it swings, snags or bothers the dog while it works.

If your dog is on the line between small and medium, look at the collar. On a thin collar (under about 3/4 inch wide), the 0.999-inch tag sits better. On a wider collar, harness or vest, the 1.25-inch tag is easier for people to read.

What to check before you buy

  1. Readability. Can someone read "SERVICE DOG" from a few feet away? Bold lettering in a contrasting color matters more than the tag's size.
  2. Both sides. Tags flip over. A double-sided tag reads correctly whichever way it lands.
  3. Material. Metal holds up better than plastic for a working dog. All K9KING service dog tags are metal with soft-enamel lettering on both sides.
  4. How it attaches. A clasp you can open lets you move the tag between the collar, harness and vest. Our silver service dog tags come with a metal lobster clasp; our black tags come with a metal split ring.
  5. Comfort. If the dog paws at the tag or it clanks against its chest, go down a size or move the tag to the vest.

A handler's tip

After 30 years of working dogs, here's what we've learned: the tag doesn't do the job; the dog does. The tag's job is to answer the question before anyone asks it. Pick the size someone can read at a glance, and put it where they'll see it first: on the vest or harness, not under the chin.
