The short answer

Clip the tag to a D-ring (the metal ring on the collar, harness or vest) using a locking clasp, and check it every week. Most lost tags come from worn split rings, cheap S-hooks, or tags hung from fabric instead of metal.

Step by step

  1. Find the metal D-ring on the collar, harness or vest. Never clip to a fabric loop or the stitching.
  2. Open the lobster clasp, hook it through the D-ring, and let it snap fully shut.
  3. Give it a firm tug. The clasp should stay closed.
  4. On a vest, clip the tag where people see it first, usually the top or side near the patch.
  5. Once a week, check the clasp spring, the ring and the D-ring for wear.

A handler's tip

Working dogs shake, roll, swim and push through brush. Anything that can open eventually will. Check the hardware as often as you check the gear, and replace worn clasps or rings before they fail, not after the tag is gone.
